Frequently Asked Questions

We want to make sure that you are able to make the most out of our interview time, so we have compiled our most Frequently Asked Questions.

How many students live on campus?

About 7,700 students currently live in the University Housing system. Seven new halls are currently under construction and will open in Fall 2018 and we anticipate housing approximately 8,400 students.

Can I live on with my partner?

Partners (regardless of marital status) may reside with CSDs in the provided on-campus apartment subject to successful completion of a background check.

Can I have a pet?

Cal Poly has adopted a permissive pet policy for CSDs. CSDs may have one cat or dog, subject to size limitations. Written approval and a cleaning fee are required.

Is the CSD position a year-round position?

The CSD position is currently a 10 month, full-time live-in position with opportunity for summer employment and rehire for a total of three academic years.

How many students are staff members do CSDs supervise?

CSDs supervise 6-24 Resident Advisors and Front Desk Operation with 4-12 front desk staff. In some areas, CSDs also supervise a graduate or undergraduate assistant. CSDs are responsible for 275-1,100 residents.

What professional development is provided?

A professional development curriculum and competency plan is implemented throughout the year. Some items of the curriculum include webinar presentations, current issues in higher education informal discussions and regional organization committee membership. In addition, CSD’s are encouraged to attend and present at regional and national conferences.

What collateral experiences are available to CSDs?

As part of the department’s professional development plans, CSDs participate in the following department committees: Cultural Inclusion, Student Staff Recruitment and Training, Leadership Development, and Community Service. Additional opportunities vary by departmental need and CSD interest.

What departments do CSD’s frequently work with?

CSD’s work closely with the Career Services, Student Academic Services, Athletics and the Cross Cultural Center. In addition, CSDs collaborate with the Cal Poly Academic Colleges and Faculty.

How often are CSD’s on-Call?

CSD’s serve on an on-call rotation. Each CSD will have at least one full week of on-call coverage and at least two weekends of on-call coverage each quarter. CSDs are responsible for on-call coverage during academic breaks.

Is a meal plan provided with the CSD Position?

To enhance CSDs' ability to interact with students and partners outside of campus housing, a partial meal plan is provided, equal to approximately half of the apartment meal plan.
