Special Assigned Spaces
"Quads, and Overflow"

Cal Poly's University Housing Department is committed to housing as many first-time freshmen as possible. We believe it is very important for first-time students to be supported by an outstanding residential living/learning program. By placing students in one of our "special assigned spaces" located within the residence halls, we are able to house students who would otherwise have to seek off-campus housing.

Listed below are brief descriptions of the "special assigned spaces" consisting of "quads" and "overflow":

Quads
Converted rooms on the first floor of each tower in Yosemite that have been configured for four residents. view

Overflow
Converted study lounges in the South Mountain Halls configured for 4 to 6 residents. view

"Quads" and "Overflow" assignments are "transitional/short-term" housing for residents who will be moved as spaces become available in rooms throughout the residence halls.

Academic Year Housing Installment Rates for 2008-2009

*All students assigned to "special assigned spaces" will receive a 20% discount on their housing fees for each day they live in their assigned space. Students who trade or are moved to a double room will then be charged the double occupancy room rate.

What is provided in the "special assigned spaces"?

Each resident will have the following:

• "Bunkable" extra long twin bed
• Desk and chair
• Dresser/wardrobe
• ResNet computer access

Who will be living in the "special assigned spaces"?

Many students volunteer to be placed in our "special assigned spaces" and receive a revised Student Housing License Agreement reflecting the discounted rate. However, in order to accept as many students into the residence halls as possible, it has become an administrative necessity to assign students to one of our "special assigned spaces." Students assigned to "special assigned spaces" will be notified early in August before final assignments are completed.

If I'm placed in a "special assigned space," how long will I be there?

• Students assigned to a "quad" in Yosemite, may stay in their assigned room for the entire academic year. If the student chooses to be reassigned to a double room during the year, his/her rate would revert to the double occupancy rate for the remainder of the license period.
• Students assigned to "overflow" spaces in the back study lounges of the South Mountain Halls will be reassigned to a residence hall room based upon their payment dates (earlier payment dates move first). During the Fall Quarter, cancellations occur throughout all of the residence halls and students living in South Mountain "overflow" will be reassigned into those rooms as they become available, sometimes as early as the first week of classes.
• Please note: room change requests from a triple or quad room into a double room will be available only after all students in "overflow" areas have been moved out.

The staff in the residence hall to which you have been assigned will be available to answer any further questions you may have and will work with the Housing Administration Office to keep you informed of vacancies as they occur throughout the quarter.
