Summer Telephone Service Who is eligible to live in the apartments? The Cerro Vista community is for first-year students as well as transfer students who are comfortable and experienced with a more independent life style. What about computer connectivity in the apartments? Each bedroom has direct, high-speed internet access (Ethernet) to the Cal Poly Computer Network and the Internet at no additional charge. There is also one port located in the common living area. To protect the on-campus computing network, residents will be required to login and go through a mandatory ResNet Pre-check procedure before gaining web access. For more detailed information please go to the ResNet web site. Why should I live on-campus instead of off-campus? Living on-campus is convenient and exciting. Here are just a few of the benefits:
Will I be able to stay in my apartment during winter break? Staff and housing services are not available during winter break; therefore, for safety and security reasons students will not be permitted to occupy their apartments. For winter break dates please see Calendar of Housing Dates. Please see Calendar of Housing Dates. What about laundry facilities? There are eight laundry rooms throughout the complex. Washers ($1.00) and dryers ($.75) are available for the use of Cerro Vista Apartment residents only. Do residents need to purchase a dining plan? All Freshmen who live on-campus (either in apartments or residence halls) are required to purchase a dining plan. All dining plans have "plus" dollars. See Campus Dining for dining plans, costs and due dates. For students with special dietary requirements, or for additional information, please contact Campus Dining at (805) 756-1175. Can I bring a small refrigerator for my room? A refrigerator is supplied in each apartment, therefore any additional small refrigerators OR freezers are NOT allowed. Parking is available, with a parking permit, in the R1 lot adjacent to the apartment complex or the R2 lot located across from Yosemite Residence Hall. Rent is charged to your Student Account. Payment options and due date information can be viewed online and is also provided on the “Student Housing License Agreement”. Payments can be made at the State Cashier's office, by credit card (for a fee), electronic check, or Financial Aid, if applicable. Students need to print out and sign the "Student Housing License Agreement" and mail to the State Cashier's Office (see License Agreement for address) along with either the Fall Quarter installment payment or mark the Financial Aid box as method of payment (see Housing Fees and Due Dates). Please be aware that on-campus space is limited and payments/License Agreements are accepted only as long as space is available, on a "first-come, first-served" basis. What if I'm getting financial aid? Students who have applied for financial aid can mark "Financial Aid" as the payment method on their "Student Housing License Agreement." By choosing this payment option, housing and dining plan payments may be paid directly by Financial Aid. If the student's award falls below the amount needed, the Student Accounts Office will notify the student of any additional fees due. For more information visit the Financial Aid website. Can I get a refund if I change my mind about attending Cal Poly? Students must cancel in writing 30 days prior to the move-in date to receive a full refund minus a $5 installment fee. For last day to cancel without financial penalty see Housing Application Checklist. Charges per day will apply thereafter. What is the length of the contract/license agreement? The Student Housing license agreement is an academic year contract (September through June). If a student moves into the apartments mid-year, his/her contract will expire at the end of Spring Quarter. Please see the Student Housing License Agreement for cancellation standards. Can I request my apartment roommates? Yes, applicants can request roommates but the requests must be mutual and of the same sex. How and when can I see a Cerro Vista apartment? Cal Poly's residence halls and apartments are locked 24/7. Access into each hall and apartment is by residents using their keys. For the security of students living on-campus, campus tours do not include the residence halls or apartments, except during Cal Poly's OPEN HOUSE and during the traditional high school spring breaks (Spring Break Tours) when Cal Poly's Housing Office conducts guided tours. What do I need to bring if I live on campus? For additional information regarding apartment furnishings and what you will need to bring, click here. The apartments are approximately 1,000 square feet. Each bedroom measures approximately 107 square feet and each bedroom has a window. Do the apartment doors open into a corridor? Some apartment doors open into an enclosed corridor while others open into a covered hallway. What is the lock system for my apartment? Entry into each apartment is with a separate card lock with individual pin numbers. Each bedroom has a key lock. How many bathrooms in an apartment? There are two bathrooms per apartment (one bathroom with a shower and the other a shower tub). What appliances will be provided? Each apartment has an electric range with a ceramic glass cooktop, refrigerator, garbage disposal, and a microwave oven. What kind of window treatment will the apartments have? Common living areas have drapes and bedrooms have mini blinds. Will I be able to hang pictures on the walls? Use of nails or tacks that penetrate the wall material is prohibited. Damage or unapproved alterations to the interior or exterior of the housing facilities as well as the grounds is prohibited. Alteration or structural change to the housing facility cannot be made without prior written permission of the Executive Director of University Housing. Students may bring some additional furnishings, however, keep in mind, the original furnishings must remain in the apartment. Students may bring free-standing storage units, or bookcases, but because of safety concerns, they cannot exceed 48" in height. Due to space constraints in the apartments, it is recommended that students not bring additional personal furniture such as couches/sofas. Click here for general move-in information. Can I bring a TV, Stereo, and/or VCR? Students can bring any of the above or decide among roommates who will bring which of the items to share. Please note that large stereo speakers are not allowed in the apartments. Students may not bring or keep any animal in or around the apartments other than fish in an aquarium not to exceed 20 gallons per apartment. If I am 21 years old, can I have alcohol in my room? Alcohol is prohibited in Residence Halls and Cerro Vista Apartments. Is smoking allowed in the Cerro Vista Apartments? Governor's Order EO599 prohibits smoking in any university building. Smoking is also prohibited within 20 feet of a building. This policy applies to all residents, guests, and visitors. The Apartments are staffed with live-in professional staff members (Coordinators of Student Development) and student Resident/Community Advisors. What types of measures are taken to protect my safety? Safety of our residents is our highest priority. Resident Advisors, who are available to students, conduct rounds three to four times a night and make sure exterior doors are secured. Each hall has a Coordinator of Student Development who is a full-time, live-in professional who is able to respond to emergencies if they occur, and alert the community if anything suspicious occurs. A Residence Hall Resource Officer program, in conjunction with University Police, was implemented in the Fall of 1997. A University Police Officer works cooperatively with residence hall staff to provide residents with safety information, community response, and ongoing resources for public safety awareness. There are courtesy phones outside Sierra Madre, Yosemite, and each South Mountain Hall. These allow residents to call friends within a hall or contact Pubic Safety Services in case of emergency. What if I have a medical emergency? University Police Dispatchers are certified in the use of the Emergency Medical Dispatch Protocol, certified in the use of First Aid and CPR, and certified in the use of Automatic External Defibrillators. Emergency Medical Technicians and/or Paramedics will also respond to care for the patient as well. For more information click here.Where is the closest police department? The University Police Department is located on campus. It is a full service police agency, which is certified by the California Department of Justice. It includes 96 members with a broad range of both sworn and civilian responsibilities. It provides emergency response, investigative services, crime prevention services, uniformed police patrol as well as a 9-1-1 communications center which provides Emergency Medical Dispatch. Officers are empowered to enforce the regulations of the university, the laws of the local community and the laws of the state and federal government. Outdoor assembly areas, emergency blue phones, wheelchair evacuation chairs and carless pickup areas have been set up around campus. Click here for emergency maps Does Cal Poly have plans in the case of a major emergency? In the event of a major emergency, one in which the campus cannot operate normally, the Emergency Management Plan will be activated and emergency activities will be coordinated from the Emergency Operations Center (EOC). Will I be able to live in the Cerro Vista Apartments for the Summer Quarter? Residents currently living in the apartments for the Academic Year will need to apply online for Summer housing and will be reassigned to a summer apartment. In addition, any current continuing student can apply to live in the apartments for Summer Quarter through an online application process. Will there be a phone provided in the apartment? Yes, there is one analog phone provided per apartment and installed in the common living area. Phone jacks are provided in each bedroom sharing the main apartment phone number. Residents may bring a phone for their own rooms. Voice mail is not part of analog service, so apartment mates may want to decide among themselves who will bring an answering machine.
