General Move-in Information for Residence Halls Double Room

For students who will be living in the residence halls:

Move-in begins on Saturday and Sunday, September 13th & 14th - 9am to 6pm, or any day thereafter from 12 noon to 6pm

• Housing assignments for new incoming residents are posted online at the Housing web site for the quarter you are attending (re-access your housing application thru my.calpoly.edu).
  Fall assignments will be available Wednesday, August 20.

• The Housing assignment information will include:
  • Student’s residence hall, room, and phone number
  • Roommate's name, home town, and phone number
  • Hall and room check-in information
  • Parking directions for move-in day

New Students
Students must show photo ID before receiving their residence hall room key.

New students moving into on-campus housing are REQUIRED to submit a "Meningococcal Disease Response" form to Cal Poly's Health Services office before being issued their room key. Click this link, www.hcs.calpoly.edu/MeningInfo.pdf, for a copy of the form.

For the safety and protection of our residents, Cal Poly Housing requires residents to submit emergency contact, medical insurance, and medical information. This information is in addition to the emergency contact information you may have already submitted to Cal Poly's Records Office via you Cal Poly Portal/Personal Tab. Students can submit this information to Housing online anytime by entering the Cal Poly Portal (my.calpoly.edu) and clicking on the link "Application System (operating hours 8am to 10pm)." Please note, this information must be submitted before students will be permitted to view their room assignments on August 20th or before checking into their rooms in September.

Need to bring:

• Bedding (extra long sheets, mattress pad, pillows, bedspread or comforter).  (Many students like to get a foam pad for their mattress.)
• Towels

Helpful Hint . . .

• On move-in day, you will need to bring a "hand truck" or dolly and bungee cords to assist in moving your belongings from your car to your room.
• As there are no elevators in the Residence Halls, please come prepared for stairs (sensible shoes, boxes that can be carried,etc.).

Suggested items to bring:

• Small desk lamp
• Clock radio
• TV/Stereo/VCR/DVD (share with roommate)
• Under-bed storage boxes (storage space under bed frame is 10" high)
• Plastic stacking tubs
• Coat hangers
• Iron (check out ironing board at front desk)
• Small desktop fan
• Electrical surge protector power strips  (to plug in computers, radio, etc.)
• Mini refrigerator - students may either rent a mini refrigerator from Campus Dining for $50 for the academic year plus a $25 refundable deposit or bring their own, however, if the student brings their own refrigerator it must meet all the following criteria without exception:
  • Cannot exceed 4.9 cubic feet
  • Measures no more than 23"W x 23"D x 34"H
  • AND is energy efficient or has the preferred "Energy Star" rating

Loft Policy:

• Due to safety concerns, only furniture provided by Cal Poly University Housing designed specifically for the purpose of lofting can be lofted. Use of risers, blocks, bricks, and etc., are NOT allowed in the residence halls.
• Free-standing storage units over 48" are NOT allowed in the residence halls.
• Due to space constraints in residence hall rooms, it is recommended that couches, large stereo speakers, personal furniture, etc., be left at home.

Appliances:

• Rice cookers, hot pots, toaster ovens or microwaves are NOT allowed in the halls. Residents may bring small coffeemakers and one-piece popcorn poppers.
• Microwave ovens are available in the lounge area on each floor of each residence hall area (students MAY NOT bring their own microwaves).

Phones:

• One phone is installed in each room.
• Each room is assigned a phone number.
• Roommates may decide among themselves to bring an answering machine.
• Local calls and basic monthly service charges are included in the housing fees.
• To make long distance calls from on-campus, students can use:
  • their personal cell phone
  • a "pre-paid" long distance card*
  • a phone company calling card*

*Students can bring to campus, a "pre-paid" long distance calling card which can be purchased from a convenience, grocery, or drug store, or big box store (e.g., Target, WalMart, Costco, KMart, etc.). Phone companies will often provide customers with calling cards that can be billed to the student's permanent home phone number.

For answers to questions about the telephone system, long distance calls and services provided in the on-campus housing rooms, please contact the ITS (Information Technology Services) desk at 756-7000 (option 2) or go to ITS Service Desk and select "Telephone Support." ITS can also provide information about cellular service providers in the San Luis Obispo area that may offer discounts and other incentives to Cal Poly students.

Computer Network Connectivity:

• High-speed connection to Cal Poly data network and the Internet.
• Computers must have a 10/100Base-T Ethernet card installed.
• Students must bring their own "twisted pair network cable" to connect the computer to the assigned in-room data wall jack.
• To protect the on-campus computing network, residents will be required to login and go through a mandatory ResNet Pre-Check before gaining network access.

Student Employment:

• Many types of jobs are available in the Housing Department and throughout campus. Housing hires over 100 student workers annually. Click here for Housing employment information.
• If you are planning on working on campus, please be prepared to locate your original* Social Security Card and present a valid picture ID. Per Federal Regulations for CSU employment, original Social Security cards must be presented upon employment (*Please note: copies/faxes cannot be accepted).
