Cal Poly - San Luis Obispo - Housing and Residential Life - Student Affairs Division

The ABCs of Living Off-campus

Alcohol - It is unlawful to consume alcoholic beverages in public areas, including yards, streets, and parking lots, etc. For more information see municipal codes 9.04.010 and 9.04.020.

Animals/Pets - Please check with your landlord for lease guidelines on pet ownership; many apartment complexes do not permit pets of any kind. Prevent leash-law violations. While in the yard, your dog should be fenced or on a leash. Check with SLO City Planning about the number of dogs or cats you can have, and with Department of Animal Regulation about other types of animals. If you can no longer take care of your pet, take it to Wood's Humane Society where it has a chance to be adopted by someone who can care for it. Don't abandon your pet.

Ambulance Service - Twenty-four-hour emergency service is available by dialing 911.

Amtrak - Amtrak buses pick up and drop off on campus for train connections to most northbound, southbound, and the San Joaquin Valley trains. See a travel agent for details or visit www.amtrak.com.

Bicycles - Many students ride their bicycles to campus. There are outside bike racks at various locations on campus. Cal Poly's University Police staff advises locking bikes to the racks at all times with a high grade "U-Lock" (i.e., Kryptonite). University Police staff also recommend using a lock-reinforcing accessory (i.e., Bad-Bones) as an extra precaution. Students are encouraged to register their bikes with Cal Poly's University Police.

Budget - Remember to add into your monthly lease costs the additional (and often overlooked) costs; such as, telephone, cable television, electricity, furnishings, insurance. For more budgeting ideas, see Budgeting 101: Cutting Costs, Saving Money.

Bus - On-campus parking is very limited and residents are encouraged to utilize the excellent bus service or use bicycles. San Luis Obispo offers public transit both around the county and within the city. The city bus is called SLO Transit and serves the campus directly at no cost to students, faculty, or staff. The county bus is called Central Coast Area Transit or CCAT for short. It also serves the campus directly, and subsidized bus passes are available for students and employees. To find out which bus best suits your needs, you can access maps and schedules by going to www.rideshare.org.

Occupancy Limits - If you rent or lease a home in the R-1 or R-2 zones, certain standards include number of bathrooms, parking requirements, and square footage per person. A permit is required if more than five adults occupy the residence. You may be forced to move out if overcrowded conditions violate zoning or safety codes.
